Nile perch angling in Egypt

Lake Nasser
Enjoy a desert lake angling safari with the aim of catching one of the world's biggest freshwater fish: the mighty Nile Perch. Lake Nasser, the huge an made Lake created by the damning of the River Nile, provides the surreally beautiful setting for this adventure, and is rightly regarded as the finest Nile Perch destination anywhere.
The Fishing
Your time on the lake will be divided between boat and shore fishing. Trolling has traditionally produced the biggest fish: while your lure is in the water you literally don't know if the next fish to hit it is going to weigh 10lbs or over 200lbs! Two anglers share one of the specially designed fishing boats in the company of one of the local Nubian guides, who know the lake intimately. These boats provide an excellent fishing platform for both trolling and casting, and are equipped with fish finders and weighing scales for fish upto 220lbs.
The shore fishing is also very exciting, and fish of over 100lbs have been landed on these safaris. Seeing a large perch appear from absolutely nowhere when your lure is nearly at your feet is breathtaking. In many ways angling for Nile perch can remind one of fishing for large pike, in addition to trolling and spin fishing with large Rapala type lures, live baiting techniques can also be very succesful. In the last few years fly fishing techniques for this species have been refined, borrowing a number of ideas from tropical saltwater flyfishing, and the Nile perch is a real challenge for the fly fisherman.
It is also possible to catch tiger fish in Lake Nasser, which can reach sizes of upto 15lbs here. There agressive hard fighting predators give fantastic sport on lighter spinning or fly tackle. A number of catfish species are present in the lake, two of which are of interest to anglers: the bagrus and more notably the legendary vundu. These can be fished for by ledgering dead baits close to shore, and if you are lucky enough to hook a vundu, it is sure to give you an unforgettable fight.
The Lake
In addition to the fishing, Lake Nasser is a wonderful place for wildlife, offering the chance to see an impressive variety of birds, mammals and reptiles including Nile crocodile, big monitor lizards, dorcas gazelle, desert fox and over 100 bird species.
Life on Safari
A Lake Nasser safari comes as close to the real meaning of the Swahili word 'safari' as you are likely to find, providing a style of mobile camping which combines comfort with the experience of being out in a real wilderness.
Guests sleep on the small fishing boats, which are equipped with two bunks in the cabin area, which can be enclosed by canvas to create a cozy, sheltered sleeping area. It is also possible to sleep out under the stars on the upper deck, which is accesible by ladder. The fishing boats are supported by a larger mother ship, which provides plenty of space to relax, sit down properly for meals, or enjoy a drink after a long day fishing. The mother ships are equipped with a flush toilet, shower, a built in kitchen and iceboxes etc. They also carry all the provisions, fuel, cook and other support staff needed, leaving the fishing boats to get on with the job of catching fish.
